Course Description:
The focus of this seminar will explore the connection between trauma and suicidality as it presents in our highest risk populations: military, veterans, LEOS, first responders, and inmates. Research has shown that a diagnosis of PTSD increases the risk for suicidality by 58 percent. It is also confirmed by research that each of these high-risk groups are often 2-5 times more likely to develop a psychiatric disorder, such as trauma, depression, or anxiety conditions. In this seminar, a broad understanding of PTSD will be reviewed, and connections made to suicidality as a symptomatic state, or psychological condition. Unique presentations, factors of consideration, and suggestions for the most successful communication techniques with these respective populations will also be discussed. Finally, time permitting, scenarios for role plays and case presentations will be introduced.
