[EXTERNAL COURSE] Response to the Non-Criminal Barricade: Disengagement & Special Relationships
Date: May 24 or May 25, 2022
Hosted by: St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office
Location: Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Complex, 4600 Kirby Loop Rd, Fort Pierce, FL 34981-5596
Presented by: Scott Savage, Savage Training Group
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course teaches law enforcement officers and supervisors the best way to respond to mentally ill persons who are armed, barricaded, and in crisis. You will leave the course with an understanding of modern disengagement and re-engagement tactics, the specific ways to avoid liability, and a collection of the best non-criminal barricade policies from police agencies all around the country.
This course breaks down the relevant laws that govern liability, “special relationships”, and the “public duty doctrine”. Through dramatic bodycam debriefs of actual non-criminal barricade incidents, you will learn why some officers were found liable and others were not. You will walk away with modern tactics your agency can use to both limit liability and prevent violent confrontations.
